How Treatment of Working Mothers Deters Women from Motherhood
The world’s countries are beginning to report a slow birth rate among their citizens, because with the rising cost of living, and the more and more challenging ways to achieve simple things, from financial to mechanical, that used to be achieved more easily, many people are choosing to reduce the stress life throws at them, at a time when everything is a source of stress these days.
There have been cases where people had no option but to return to their parents to survive under their roofs, because they had failed at trying to do it all on their own. So when you find a woman who has overlooked all of these discouraging things, from the increased taxes, rents, economic uncertainty, global wars and trades, and completely unsoothing circumstances everywhere they turned, a woman decides to be a mother, bears a child and gives birth to that child, only to be termed irrelevant at he replace of work, because she went from making their world revolve around their work place, and source of income, to creating a family of their own.
They are then indirectly punished by the workplace in the most humiliating way ever. From making them do little or nothing, which then convinces them that their services are no longer needed, because they have done little to nothing for the office in the time they were indirectly taken off work. While the UK government is trying to encourage mothers in society to return to work, by allowing them 15 hours of childcare per week, for babies who are 9 months old.
But employers are feeling a little at a loss, with VAT, insurance and more being increased, increased cost of running their business, they can’t have someone staying away from work, getting paid, in the name of caring for their babies, rather than the work they have been assigned. This plot twist hasn’t gone unnoticed, as people who are aspiring to become mothers shortly, are too scared to get married, because they do not want to be victimised when they fall pregnant, like the new mum they know at work, who was fired.
Some organisations have mastered the beautiful act of sandwiching the horrible act, with the notion that they are doing the lady in question a favour, by making it about giving her peace, because she is assumed to be overwhelmed and with no mental capacity for work-related issues.
This is a big issue for mothers, because the moment they protest, they are made to work in an unconducive environment, where she is unable to abandon their newborn alone to work, which further proves the employer’s point, when they force them to unnaturally balance their professional life and their childcare duties.
They are forcing them to create unrealistic long working hours, reduced or inefficient support, and sometimes, a complete absence of it.
An inadequate maternity to mothers will leave to fatque for the mother who has little to no personal time when she gets home. She worked at her workplace all day or night sometimes, and then cared for her newborn all night long from the moment she got back home, leading to burnout, guilt, and stress.
This further discourages the aspiring mothers of society, because no one wants to lose their source of income at a critical time like this, so it discourages many women from becoming mothers,
which guarantees a next generation, which further declines the birth rate, changing societal norms, and redirecting the age grade of a country. This leads to a decline in the young and vibrant in society.
Major Issues
- Less Than Enough Support System: Unlike in the motherland, where everyone can look after a child for their neighbour who needs to run an errand. This is something families lack when they relocate to the UK. The couple are left to do everything for their children, every single thing. This affects the work, making the parents need some considerate policies at their place of work. Mothers very much need work flexibility at this point, otherwise, childcare will take all the money.
- Discrimination: Workplace discrimination is either obvious or indirect. The worst is the indirect one, where you are given two different reactions from people who plot and say something unpleasant about you behind your back, but when they see you, they smile and seem friendly, even when they are planning to get you fired, their could be stereotype, racism and a different treatment.
- Shortened Career: The uncertainty that surrounds the career of a woman who is a mother is certainly higher than that of a single lady. A woman is made to choose between her career and her children. So the mother is made to expect anything from her workplace, because she is made to understand that she can’t have it all. I tell myself, ‘ I either choose to train my children 100%, or I commit to my work 100%. Doing this, she doesn’t see a future for her career, unless it is a business, and she owns that business.
Conclusion
When a woman who was devoted to her job decides to get married and build a family, for her natural want and future, she is either directly or indirectly going to get punished by the people who decide her fate decide her future in that career.
They decide if she is valuable enough to be retained or simply tossed. While the government tries to get more people into the labour market, so they can get more taxes, employers are saving themselves, their pockets, and the future of their business. Women are dropped from their work because they have chosen to become mothers.
This then creates decreased job satisfaction, where people begin to dread their jobs, rather than enjoy them, the unsettling thought and experience ulter her productivity level. It increases her stress and burnout, and the trauma then delays further pregnancies.
All of these can then be solved with a family-friendly policy at work, with a wide consideration for the position these mothers go through. Parental leave payment is already in place, and child support for single mothers or parents.
Zero tolerance for Discrimination in work settings. Tackling these issues will help empower women who want to work and raise a family, encourage even more women to go into it, when they see a good comfort for those already in it.
That way, the labour market won’t suffer, more taxes will be paid, government will not pay the stay home mothers, the economy will not suffer shortage of hands becuse everyone contributes to it growth, the population will not be more of the old people, because the young women are making babies and renewing the population.
