FG Asks Nigerians to Stop Eating Ponmo Meant For Export
The country Nigeria is one of the Countries of the world, where they basically eat every part of a cow. From the head to the heel, the tail, the bone, the flesh, and the skin, everything. When Nigerians consume a goat or cow in your presence, you will definitey be shocked.

The basic presence of a well prepared cow skin, is such a vibe in every Nigerian meal. Ponmo, kanda, like it is commonly called, is so common in Nigeria that they have gone from being used to prepare soup, you basically every meal.

Meals like rice, beans, porridge, and fufu, soup, pepper soup, snack, finger foods, you name it. The federal government is now complaining about the rate at ehich the consumption is being done. Apparently it is a serious consumption, since the federal government is estimating that it would be upto a $5billion waste.

The federal government is calling out the people who consume the kponmo, the people who consume kponmo are being called out, and when I say the people, I mean, everyone in Nigeria consumes kponmo.

They have now warned the Nigerian citizens thst their incessant comsumption is costujg the country. The claim is coming at. Very confusing time, since Nigerians have always been known to eat kponmo, because they love it, and are known for it, then at what time did the Nigerian government carry out a research on the amount of skin consumed, the monetary value of it, the estimate supposed export rate, and then calculate it meticulouslh enough to arrive at $5Billion.

They supposedly evaluated or even got the income total, before releasing this statement? Everh statistics from Nigeria, should always be taken with a pinch of salt, or perhaps, as a pure undiluted lie. I am very much intetested in the calculation that came to that figure, when it comes to animal skin consumption.

They make it seem like it is being wasted. If you want to exporg a product, but your immediate environment is consuming it, wouldn’t be considered insufficient amount produced?

How do you intend collecting the animal skin that is being produced and consumed in Nigeria, by Nigerians, and then export them. If you do have enough to export, it simply means you are not producing enough to export.

Why are you intending to export to anywhere, when your immediately environment is consuming everything? If you wanted to export anumal skin from Nigeria, then invest in more animals, in more skin production, which is even morr thsn the country people would consume, so you can export them.
You can’t tell people to avoid consuming animal, skin so you can have the opportunity to export it. That is funny. This gut is out here warning Nigerians against consumption of animal skin.

How ridiculous can anyone get? What is even nore ridiculous, is that they are serious, and are not joking, or perhaps playing with this issue. Nigerian are funny, but their Government is even funnier.

The government is reportedly raising concerns over the widespread of animal hides and skin. For context, this consumption is as old as Nigeria. It is nothing new, it has been a practixe for the longest of times, but suddenly, the government thinks it needs to stop. I told you the Nigerian government makes the best jokes.

They warned that the practice is harming Nigeria’s multi-billion-dollar leather industry. This has been the same economy where the government enjoys freely, without fear or favour. They do it with the highest grade of impunity.

Director-General of the Raw Materials Research and Development Council, Prof. Nnanyelugo Ikemounso, issued the warning on Thursday during the National Campaign Against the Consumption of Ponmo in Abuja. This is a stable meal of Nigeria. This is what the country people enjoy. This is what these guys eat. They have eaten it for so long and so well, that the world now associates animal skin to Nigerians. Yet, they are looking export it, when it is insufficiently produced, when it is not enough.

He explained that diverting hides and skins for food deprives local manufacturers of essential raw materials needed to sustain and grow the leather sector.

I highly doubt this claim, because Nigerians by what is being sold. If the manufacturers are sufficiently.compensated, they would have chosen the highest bidder. You will never find a manufacturer of animal skin, who would tell you that they were offered a good price by the people who need their animal skin for production, but chose to give it to the people to comsume it, and buy it at a lower. For the manufacturers to sell to the consuming crowd, it simply means that they offer more profit to these manufacturers.

According to him, the Nigerian leather goods market was valued at $2.79 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $4.96 billion by 2033, but this growth could be derailed if ponmo consumption continues unchecked.

Is valued thing was done by who again? Ifnit was valued, it was because thry assume that expprt would be possible. When you can’t export, then you truly can not export. It is not enough, and you can’t be tempted by what you do not have. If the Country wanted to get the amount estimated, they can do well to produce more to make more.

“From an economic and industrial standpoint, cow hides are one of Nigeria’s most valuable raw materials. Our nation possesses a vibrant leather industry with enormous potential for job creation, foreign exchange earnings, and contributions to GDP,” Prof. Ikemounso added:

Sure we do all of that, but again, we also consume that raw material you so fondly speak of. The question here is: why should Nigerians stop eating what they like, what thry have eaten for such a long time, and give it up, so Government can export it, and make the money they are fantasising about, and then squander it, like every other Nigerian money, squander it without fear or favour?

Why should Nigerians do that? Why should Nigerians please the government by staying away from ponmo? If the government was so obsessed with making money through ponmo, then they should invest more into the industry, and get it up to a large scale event, that will them help to ensure that the amount the want, the amount they are eyeing, will be achieved.

“Sadly, the continuous diversion of hides for ponmo consumption denies our industries access to quality raw materials, weakens our tanning and leather manufacturing sector, and diminishes Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global leather market.”

Again, it is ridiculous for a government to ask its people to stop the consumption of a particular food, which they are very well know to love and consume so they can start exporting it. Where have you heard such? How ridiculous can one be? So the people shoudl starve themselves to help the government make money?

The same government that is never accountable for other nation treasury, never accountabke for constant looting and misappropriation of funds? And not the people should stay away from the food the are know for, worldwide, just so the government can enjoy yet another solo national cake?

He noted that the global leather value chain is valued between $420 billion and $1 trillion, stressing that with the right policies, infrastructure, and access to raw materials, Nigeria can significantly expand its share.

Your Government doesn’t have what it takes to hsndle such a project, because if they did, theu would know that asking eople to stop eating ponmo, so it can be exported, it is unbelievably ridiculous. What happened to making it surplus, so people can eat, and the remaining can be exported. That is literally how export works.

A Country has to first of have mote than enough, in order to export, and not depriving themselves of what they need and love, just so federal government can access the billions and trillions the ponmo/hides market has to offer. And it is sad coming from an igbo man.

The people are hungry, and they make do with just about anything that they lay their hands on, just to survive. They have complained, protested, called out, begged, and even gotten unpleasant with words, snd nothing has been done to reduce the hunger in the land, but now you want them to forgo their peaceful ponmo, which by the way, is now expensive, just so government can ball heavy. Where does the money go? Who is held accountabke for it? Who safeguards the Nigerian Money? How many looting government officials have been brought to books? And now you want yet another scrifice from the people? Ridiculous.

Ikemounso clarified that the campaign is not targeted at cultural or dietary practices but aims to ensure hides and skins are channelled into more productive industrial use for national economic benefit.

All he said, just shows how unplanned, out of touch, incredibly clueless, anyone can be, once they join an equally ridiculous group.
