5 things Teachers Expect Reception pupils to learn before Resumption
When the reception kids arrive at their new schools this autumnin the UK, the teachers already expect that they are not starting afresh with these kids who just stepped into their new schools, because they have been prepared,
in line with the curriculum, in line with growth, and in line with enabling the kids prepare for their future schools, they are mostly expected to have atleast 50-70% of independence, which have learnt from preschool, ain combination with that which they been taught at home.
These kids have found their voices, they have found their words, they have watched some new tv shows and have learnt to use certain expressions that shock both teachers and parents.
They are told what is right, and what is absolutely unacceptable. They push boundaries, dare the parents, break rules, perfect their manipulative tantrums, and find out how deep their cheekiness can go,
before their parents put their foot down in correction. But in all of these, their new teachers only expect them to know five things, out of all they are picked up through out their last 3-5 years of existence.
They are only expected to retain and show their concersance for five of these things at their new school, to their new teachers in the new big school.

These kids have attained some impressive level of independence from their pre-schools. They are gone from pooping in their diapers while they play with other kids, to indicating that they actually need their toilet,
They have gone from learning to clean up after themselves, flushing,and them pulling up their clothes properly, with curling up their bottom clothes into an uncomfortable wiggled ball, making them walk awkwardly and create a print on their skin.
They have gone silence,to head movement, to actually having an endless conversation with their preschool teachers.
They have gone from preschool schoolmates, go friends. From fighting, to playing in a coordinated manner.
In a bitter-sweet kind of way, their Preschool teachers have prepared them for their new school, but will be sad to see them go and grow forever.
They next time they see them, they will simply be a figment of their imagination, and will be alot bigger than the teacher remembers.
But the impact the teachers leave in them, will help them cope in their new schools, so what are these things the UK big school teachers expect from the fresh reception children?
1. Kids Need to Know How Eat and drink by themselves
The reception class is expected, of predicted to be with atleast 20 kids. The rate of immigration in the UK,has risen, people are making babies monthly,
and that might take number from 20, to a lot more. These teachers, though experienced, wouldn’t mind having a little help here and there from their new kids in their class.
So, while the teachers wouldn’t mind helping these kids feed. In the UK, the UK reception kids are fed free meals in class, courtesy of the government.
These kids have their parents pick their preferred meals from an app, at the start of the week, which they are fed during lunch time.
The teacher can not possibly go around feeding all of her class kids, because the food for the unfed, the ones who have to wait flr the first set to get fed, would go cold, and that would further reduce their interest in the food.
While it is cute that mothers try to pretend thag their kids are still babies, it doesn’t speak well when the fit child, not special needs, is struggling to feed themselves,
is struggling to hold their fork or spoon and feed themselves, because their mum and pampered them so much by feeding them at home, because she doesnt want the after meal mess.
It is also cute and all to have these kids drink their dsiy does of milk. But is it okay for a 4-5 year old to still drink their milk from a bottle? Which further translates to the kid struggling to drink properly from a cup, because they make very noisy sips frm their cups, due to lack of practice.
Thirdly, does the child how to control their mess. They are not expected to be perfect, but the toddler mess days, shouldn’t be seen in their big school days. Messy eating creates more work for their class teachers.
Teach them to clean up after themselves, after every meal, knowing that mess is not okay. There the issues to sort out with the kids before you send them off to big school.
2. Kids should Use the bathroom by themselves, including cleaning, and dressing up
Ofcourse no able bodied child, a child that has not got special needs, a child with capacity and ability shouldn’t still be in diapers at reception. Because this then means tht parents have missed two major steps in the child’s development.
Teach them to sit in the toilet, not just their potty, the actual toilet should be used, they clean up after themselves, and then dress up. They should even be able to use the toilet brush to clean up after themselves at this stage.
A child that uses the toilet independently, cleans up, and properly dresses up, will be a good one for the reception teachers.
Children this stage, even request for their privacy from the teachers, while they are in the toilet, asking the teacher to excuse them,and stand outside while they finish from the toilet. So check to confirm that your child is able to do this their before resumption date.
3. Kids Should Follow instructions by Hanging up backpacks and jackets, and settling down in the rug
As summer ends and autumn begins, the UK school kids will return to their jacket wearing life, and that will be a daily routine.
While they are buying those beautiful backpack for the new school year, please teach them to open, close and hang their bags, for the sake of their school.
They do this every school morning in class, hanging up their bags and jackets, and being able to take off and put on ther shoes on the right foot.
Your child shouldn’t expect the teachers to do everything that concerns them, they help the teachers by helping themselves. You can practice this with the children at home, in preparation for their reception journey.
4. Kids should be able to clearly Ask for help from teachers
The new kids at reception, are expected to find their world, and manners at home, not using inappropriate words, or acting out at school.
The teachers expect tantrum, but not the pure, undiluted one, they had as toddlers. They are expected to act better, when they are being upset or feeling anxious.
Dont even start with the whole, ‘they are kids’. Train those children and stop making excuses for the way the act.
This is the stage where they have timeouts, they are made to understand the consequences for their actions, and that it is important.
It is important for the family, it is important for the teachers. Teach them the right way to ask for HELP, to perfect the use of ‘please, and thank you’.
To out them in the right sentence for asking for help from their teachers. Teachers are not magicians, neither are they slaves.
Help the train your child properly, it is for the benefit of the family, the school,and the society. The job is not just for parents, neither is it just for teachers. It is a team work, with everyone making their significant contribution to the growth and betterment of the child.
5. Sit and listen properly
In the new school, kids are expected to be able to sit stil snd listen to their teachers at story time. This if their funniest one, because all.kids ate unique. Some will want to continue their happy play, while the teachers has asked them to other up for story time in the rug.
At first,the teacher will have to catch them and position them in the rugs, because what else would be the option,
and they have had story times from their previous schools, so, while some will recognise it and settle down for the read as fast as possible, others will call it boring and try to repell against it,trying tosuggest more fun activities.
The teachers will have to pysicay bring some people to the center rug for storh time, and subsequently, they might start to enjoy it, and start to settle down as fast as they are asked to, all by themselves, and sometimes with his/her friends, hard-in-hand.
Conclusion
To ensure a smooth transition for the child into reception, and into their new school, you don’t only need to buy them new uniform, new shoes,and bags, you also have to.ensure that they have meet their milestones for theif ages, they have to taught to behave well, and act right in school.
This is not the time to try to disturb the peace of the school, not the time to paint their character black and set a trap for the teacher. Have your kids acting right, so they can enjoy this new school.
